How can I tell the difference between an original drawing and a print?

Answer: Distinguishing an original work from a print requires looking closely at the medium and the paper surface. Under a magnifying glass or loupe, an original drawing (such as charcoal, graphite, or ink) will show variations in texture, ink pooling, or graphite sheen, and the medium sits on top of the paper fibers. Prints, particularly photomechanical reproductions, often reveal a microscopic pattern of tiny dots or a completely flat ink surface embedded into the paper. If the piece is a limited edition print, it will often feature a fraction-style number (e.g., 25/100) in pencil near the bottom margin.

Should I remove the drawing from its frame to measure it or check for signatures?

Answer: We strongly advise against removing an artwork from its frame yourself, as old paper is exceptionally delicate and easily torn or damaged by handling. Instead, please provide the "sight size" (the visible dimensions of the artwork inside the frame or matting) and include the overall frame dimensions. If you suspect there is a signature, inscription, or artist label hidden behind the backing cardboard or under the mount, please let our specialists know in your submission notes rather than attempting to unframe the piece.

How do condition issues like spotting or yellowing affect the value of a drawing?

Condition is a major factor in the valuation of works on paper. Common issues include "foxing" (the rusty brown spots caused by mold or iron contaminants in old paper), "mat burn" (darkening caused by acidic framing materials), and overall yellowing or fading from UV light exposure.
